There are two kinds of people in the world – those who constantly buy books to fill their collections, and those who keep filling their bookshelves with books they don’t even know why they have.

Today we will help you no matter which category you fall into. The one thing you definitely want to avoid is ruining your books in the process. Whether you love them or not is out of the question – just keep them safe. So let’s start!

Step 1: Say Goodbye to Some of Them

Depending on the category, in which you fall, you will either find this extremely easy or extremely difficult. But it is a necessary part of the process.

There are books in your collection, which you don’t need. Do you have two copies of the same book? It’s possible. Give one away. Do you have a reading friend? Surprise them with the books you pass on.

If you are a book lover yourself, just go through your collection and point down the series (because you probably have tons of series), which you are not that fond of. There are probably a few. Slim down your collection. You will end up spending less on moving AND having more space for new books in your new place.

Step 2: Use This Great Way to Pack Them

Packing books seems like a simple task, right? After all, they are blocky, so they should be able to get stacked in a box easily. Guess again.

You have to find moving boxes that are sturdy. There are some tougher cardboard boxes you can use, but be sure to find small ones. Stack a lot of books together in one box and you won’t be able to lift it.

Be sure to use newspapers or packing paper to wrap the books you value most. You can also use newspapers as a bit of padding for the box, if the books fail to fill it just barely. Don’t cram another book there, it will get damaged. Just use some newspaper padding.

Step 3: Label The Boxes!

We can’t stress this enough. Labeling saves you tons of time. And while it may not be the most important thing when it comes to books, it can still serve you great.

Imagine you have a very specific order to your collection. Do you want to instantly get it back when you move? Here’s what you do. First, take a picture of your bookcases. Several pictures may be necessary for you, booklovers. Then take a marker pen and when you fill a boxes with books, write on the side which books are in there.

You can save some time if you want to use a range (e.g. “Book of Giant Trees – Book of Small-to-Medium Trees”, 5 books).
